Title: Enforcing some rules.

To-date LankanTorrents had no enforcement of common BitTorrent tracker guidelines, such as minimum share ratio etc. This was occurring even though members were informed of an acceptable ratio since this site went live.

Recent developments (mass of dead torrents etc) and member feedback via the poll have led the administration to start enforcing minimum ratio rules.

As you can see from the poll to the left, a majority of members want HIGHER DOWNLOAD SPEEDS on their torrent downloads. This can only be achieved if the members contribute by seeding downloaded content. This doesn't seem to be happening now, and that has lead to horrible download speeds and a lot of dead torrents.

So we're taking a small step towards weeding out the leechers and keeping in the active members.

Members with a share ratio of less than 0.2 will be stripped of download priviledges, and then banned.

We will start enforcement of this new rule exactly a week from now. That's 19th of August 2006, so you have time to upload any torrents you've already downloaded.

Pls. remember, this is for the good of the community.

Happy torrenting.

Title: Reaching the 1000 member mark

We hit 1000 registered members today. Is this an achievement? Definitely! The question is, who helped LankanTorrents achieve this? No, not the 1000th member who happened across this tracker, but all of you who have been contributing in your many ways to help keep this tracker alive. All of you who have been uploading new content, everyone who's been seeding almost constantly for others, and even those who work against us, indirectly giving us the strength to make this community bigger, stronger and better.

So a big thank you goes out to all the (active) members of LankanTorrents .

Here's to another 1000 members

Talk about it on the forum.

Title: LT Streaming Radio - for the metalheads?

Is it just me, or is 90% of Sri Lanka's web presence biased towards hip hop? Centigradz this.. iraj that. Don't get me wrong - there's nothing wrong with Sri Lankan hip hop, and infact I think it's at a pretty good standard, international even... some of the talent is amazing. But it seems all the startup SL online communities that are popping up all over the web are just feeding off this popularity to the point where all other genres such as rock or metal are totally forgotten about. Communities with member counts going into the 10 thousands have *empty* forum threads discussing SL rock and metal - whats going on? Is it that these communities attract *only* hip hops fans since they're built around the genre? Probably - so what happens to the genuine Sri Lankan rock/metal fans?

Enough ranting - let me get to the subject of my post. We at LankanTorrents want to start a streaming radio station, where anyone can listen to SL originality via the net. It's a radio station, with a DJ, and music - but it's online. We'd like to stick to the genre of rock in general - the specifics will be laid out later.

What we need is for you to voice your opinion. The poll is on the left hand side. Go ahead, start voting .

Discuss this on the forum.

Title: April Rock Saturday 2006

The monthly Rock Saturday falls on the 29th of April, and as usual will be held at the Womens International Hall.

We will be present to video it for those who can't make it.

If all goes well, we should have performances by Stigmata, Paranoid Earthling, Cold Armour, Nemesis, Dilan, Fallen Grace and Picasso Recess.

We *do* have a backlog of videos that need to be published - we're hoping to make all of them available during the month of May.

Title: Suba aluth avuruddak weva!

After some downtime due to security issues, LankanTorrents is back. Our apologies for any inconvenience... if you were in the middle of downloading any files, you should be able to continue your downloads if there are any seeders left.

All uploaded torrents are still available and can be downloaded. I kindly request all seeders to continue seeding as before.

The tracker has been updated to a new version and you will notice a few small layout changes - most notably the torrent details now open as a page and not as a popup. Member ranks have messed up - so we're depending on you to inform us if you had a higher rank than you have now so that we can make any necessary changes. Other changes are minor and won't affect members much.

Suba aluth avuruddak weva!

Internet Relay Chat. It's a place that members can log into and converse with moderators and other members of LankanTorrents. The human being is a social creature after all!

So let me know what you'll think - voice what you're thinking by voting on the poll, "IRC Channel for LankanTorrents?"

If you've never taken part in the poll, we'd appreciate if you did for this one and... it's on the left of the screen, scroll down slightly.

Title: Is Chaos Really Silent?

We have a little trailer which will serve as a sneak preview of what the Silent Chaos Serpentine Launch concert video will be like.

There are two filetypes available, SVCD quality which is 16MB and a WMV which is 1MB. They are both the same video, but the WMV is of much less quality - easier on a slow connection.

How do I download only one file from this bundle?

Title: The time between event and video upload

The 25th of February was a reminder to us all as to why Stigmata are called the metal gods of Sri Lanka. The launch of Silent Chaos Serpentine took place at M.K.O.P to a sellout crowd.

LankanTorrents was there to video the launch, and we're working as hard as possible to edit and publish the video online ASAP - we have more than 8 hours of video to sift through and put together before we can make it available, so bear with us.

We might upload a little something  to keep you'll occupied till we can publish the full video - so watch this space!

LankanTorrents will be there, filming and recording throughout to bring those unfortunate souls who wont be able to make it, a peice of the action as downloadable video.

Title: Let's throw a Tantrum

The launch of Tantrum's first EP took place at the Cafe De Artiste on the 3rd of February 2006.

Nemesis and Sword of the Spirit opened for Tantrum, and the stars of the night dished out some fantastic original talent as well as covers of their favorite bands.

We were there to capture all of the launch for those unfortunate enough to have not been there to view.

Thanks and kudos goes out to the band for allowing the launch to be put up for download on LankanTorrents, thus paving the way for an era where Sri Lankan talent can be shared without geographic boundaries.

The video will be completed and uploaded, according to our calculations, sometime next week. So till then sit tight, grab some of our other content and watch this space!

Title: VIP membership up for grabs

VIP membership on LankanTorrents up for grabs - and it comes with perks! Read all the way down for the goodies. Here's the deal. To have the prestigious 'Very Important Peer' status bestowed upon you, a few criteria have to be fulfilled. But before we get to the 'rules', you'll have to meet certain minimum requirements. They are as follows.

You will have to...
1) Have an internet connection with an upload rate of over 128 Kilo Bits per second. That means if you can upload at a constant rate of about 16 Kilo Bytes per second you're good. Anything faster is obviously welcome.

2) Be able to seed for long periods of time. Long periods = More than half a day, everyday. Would be preferable if you keep your PC running 24/7... no, it won't blow up. This isn't strictly enforced.

3) Be dedicated. Don't be lazy to open your BitTorrent client and seed. It's not a big thing to ask of you.

If you meet these requirements, read on.

The big boss rule - Share Ratio
Members with a share ratio of 1.5 and above are eligible. Also if you're over 1.0, we will consider.

Any members with the above fullfilled will be contacted and offered VIP'ship.

"So why would I want to be a VIP?"

Well, firstly you're doing a great community service, and helping Sri Lanka get a foothold on the internet by contributing to local technologies. That and having a nice red '' next to your name makes you feel special. If these don't stimulate the uploader in you, we have some bribes as well.

> Free Web Space! How much space? Depending on how much we like you, it will be between 250MB to 500MB.

> You will also get your very own http://yourname.lankantorrents.com subdomain with...

> FTP access. Funky eh?

It works wonders as a pickup line - "Hey baby, check out my LankanTorrents subdomain "

So start working on your share ratio now! We'll be watching you.

If you're interested, PM or email the admin and you'll be given further details

Note: LankanTorrents will not be held liable for any damages caused by use of pickup lines related to LT subdomains.

Title: Selecting a specific file

You might have noticed some torrents containing multiple files - music torrents which have multiple mp3's or music video torrents that have multiple video files. So what do you do if you want to download only one file from the bundle? Simple. Most torrent clients have a feature that allows you to select and deselect files from bundled torrents. This explanation is on how to do it with BitComet.

Note: If you have no idea what this means, you either probably have to read the BitTorrent tutorial or you don't need to read this. Move on. If not, please do read since this will save you a lot of bandwidth and frustration.

More on the How To page.

Title: November Rock Saturday

Our "crew" was there to get it on tape, and we've got all of it (except Dylan Jayakody) for you. This was the last Rock Saturday for this year, and the event ended with a Jam with members from all the bands doing a little bit of what they're good at. The videos are being edited and uploaded slowly... but surely.

Enjoy!

Title: Oct Rock Saturday Torrents now available

The videos have landed! The video has been edited and each artist/band's performance will have one .wmv file dedicated to it. I have started uploading the videos - probably one video a day, or increase the time gaps to ease the load on seeders (and maybe tease those who begged for a fast upload )

Enjoy!

Title: Acoustic Saturday

This times Rock Saturday was a teeny bit laid back compared to the usual loud n heavy rhythms everyone's used to. We managed to get most of the performances on video.

Performances we got on video -
Most of Lein and Dylan, Tantrum, WhirlWind, Stigmata, most of Paranoid Earthlings and joint performance with Stigmata, Double bass clips of Siblings of Hatred.

What we missed -
Dylans dolphins cry, the whole of Insanity, Some songs of Paranoid Earthlings (69.. sorry we had battery problems), Siblings of Hatred.

The tapes have been submitted for encoding and will be edited and uploaded soon - patience.

Title: October Rock Saturday

October Rock Saturday to be held on the 29th at Womens International Hall. Expect to see Tantrum, Siblings of Hatred, Paranoid Earthlings, WhirlWind and ofcourse Stigmata. If all goes smooth, we should have videos of each performance up by Sunday. Stay tuned.

From the Sunday Observer (link):
Gear yourself for a gigantic show with some of the country's best talent ready to perform with great sounds and lighting to create an ambience unlike anything else in the country. from the raw metallic sounds of Tantrum, to the dark, brutal sounds of Siblings of Hatred the night looks very promising indeed.

Add an insane touch of in the form of Insanity the acoustic genius Dylan Jayakody with another acoustic spot by Lien and with a special Classical Rock guest performance by Tilak, Primal, Kamal and Jude the smooth hard rock groove Paranoid Earthling from Kandy Shrirock specialists Whirlwind and the architects of chaos Stigmata adding there energy to the already fantastic mix of talent.
